Steps to take following a maritime accident

Boating is one of the most enjoyable hobbies one can have. There are so many beautiful waterways in Louisiana that any type of watercraft will make for a great day. You need a license to operate a boat and this can only be obtained by taking a boater safety class. You can take as many precautions as possible and still wind up in a maritime accident. Here's what you should do following such an accident.

It is required under federal law to file a report with the local law enforcement agency if you are involved in a boating accident. When is such a report required? For starters, if the accident caused an injury, it must be filed. If there was property damage, the report has to be filed. If the accident was severe enough to cause a fatality or cause someone to go missing, a report has to be filed with the police.

The law regarding boating accidents also requires you to do the following when involved in one:

  • Stop immediately and identify yourself and your boat
  • Provide any assistance to other boaters who might be injured or in the water
  • Write down the date, time and location of the accident
  • Exchange boater information with the other vessels involved
  • File a report with the local authorities

If you are involved in a boating accident, be sure you file a report with the authorities, seek medical treatment and contact your insurance company. Even if the accident wasn't your fault, it's also important that you speak with an experienced maritime accident attorney about the case.
