What is a TBI?

A TBI is a traumatic brain injury. Unfortunately many commercial fishermen and oil rig workers are vulnerable to a TBI because of the slippery surfaces of the boats and rigs.Anyone who hits his or her head can suffer from a brain injury, including motor vehicle accident victims, victims of assault and sports injury victims. TBIs include concussions and skull fractures.

What are the symptoms of a TBI?

Some people may feel “dizzy” or “a little off” after slipping and falling, bumping their head or being hit on the head. However, the negative affects of a brain injury can be long-term and debilitating.

The symptoms of a TBI

According to the Mayo Clinic the symptoms of a brain injury include:

  • Immediate loss of consciousness
  • No loss of consciousness but feeling dazed, dizzy, unbalanced or confused
  • Feeling nauseated
  • Memory loss, inability to focus
  • Mood swings
  • Sleep disturbances: Fatigue and sleeping more than usual, or sleeplessness
  • Speech issues, for example forgetting words or slurred speech
  • Headache that can be mild to severe

How to treat a TBI

If you fell and hit your head or had a head injury, even a “mild” one,  while on the job then the first thing is to report it to your boss or supervisor. You will need to be assessed by a medical professional right away- the very same day the accident happens. Do not go home and go to bed or lie down

Once your health care practitioner has made a diagnosis he or she will prescribe treatment. Treatment can range from physical therapy to occupational therapy to neurological testing or medication. It is important not to take medication unless prescribed by your doctor. You should also avoid alcohol and caffeine.

Chances for recovery

Most people who have had a mild head injury recover in a few days. The more severe the injury the longer the recovery time, which,  according to St. Luke’s Hospital , can be months or even years. With TBIs the two most important things are to seek medical help and to be patient with yourself.
