Cruise staff members must know when safety drills are happening

When it comes to safety training on a cruise ship, the whole crew needs training on how to respond to emergency situations. Cruises are massive vessels where anyone can easily get lost and left behind if they are unaware of what’s going on and what they need to do.

While ship technology has improved to heavily minimize these chances of emergencies, it also makes it that much more important to let workers know how to act when these new devices are in motion. This also holds true for safety drills. Even though the ship isn’t in an actual emergency, neglecting to inform all of the staff when they happen can leave them ill-prepared or cause actual disasters on their own.

New doors, new problems

Last year, a former marketing and revenue manager of Royal Caribbean International successfully sued her employers for a safety drill incident nearly a decade prior. During a routine fire safety drill, the cruise’s doors shut tight to prevent flooding in an emergency situation. A nurse from the port they were at was unaware that the drill was going on and tripped after opening the door. The worker held the door to keep it open for the nurse, but the door shut tight and crushed her hand.

Her injury got worse after her employers brought her to a doctor in Barcelona who only ended up inflicting more damage. The incident gave her chronic pain syndrome and PTSD. Royal Caribbean discharged her, but she managed to get back at them with a lawsuit charging them for door operation negligence, medical malpractice and wrongful termination.

Communication is crucial

This incident demonstrates that even the most popular cruise lines in the world are vulnerable to these types of mistakes. Even though safety drills are designed to help workers know how to act in emergency situations, they can end up creating separate emergencies of their own if not all of the staff or anyone else on board is unaware of it.
