Serving Injured Workers Across The Gulf Coast

Stay safe at sea during hurricane season

It's hurricane season, and that means that there are going to be hurricanes coming and going through the region. Not every year has severe storms, but 2020 has been one that has set records.

Hurricane Laura has impacted Louisiana and the coast, and that has the potential to put workers in danger. Fortunately, most people do evacuate when hurricanes are on their way, but offshore oil and gas production takes place in some cases.

Two storms were on their way in on Aug. 24, and those resulted in over 100 offshore platforms sending their workers back to land. Not all platforms evacuated, though. The Interior Department reported that only 114 platforms had been evacuated, which adds up to 18% of the staffed platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

What should workers do if heavy storms are inbound?

Most of the time, employers will be clear if their offshore staff members need to evacuate. Keep in mind, though, that even if they do, the storm could cause damage to the platform that makes it dangerous to return to work. All of these platforms need to be checked over by the maintenance teams after a large hurricane and before workers return.

What should you do if you're injured because of bad weather on your platform?

If you are injured at sea, it's important to know your rights under the Longshore and Harbor Workers' Compensation Act. You may be able to seek compensation for any injuries that you suffered and may be able to receive special benefits thanks to this Act.
